A New Warrior of Light Rises

Melanie stirred again to the sweet smell of desert flowers and grasses.  It was early morning so the air still felt cool.  Rising from her bed she began to put on her new robes.  She'd now accepted that she still needed to wear night clothes to bed and sleep under the covers and that the only reason why in the game their characters slept in their clothes on top of the beds was because the game engine wasn't designed to do it any different.  Luckily she had already crafted suitable night wear in the game.  It was just a simple long white night dress with a pale blue and white dressing gown.  There was also a pair of bottoms and a couple of matching night caps that after one look at them Melanie decided she wasn't going to wear either, not unless she was in some cold climate where keeping her head warm would be ideal.  The slippers however were rather cute - fluffy white slippers with a pair of tiny pom poms and a thin black ribbon sewn on the front.

After folding her night clothes and placing them back into her backpack she picked up a thick red leather-bound book from the nearby cartonier then sat on the edge of the bed and began reading.  The thaumaturges' guild were very generous in allowing her to take one of their books from their collection outside their halls.  She flicked open a page on a new spell and began reading.

"Scathe" is a unique spell among thaumaturges as this spell requires no elemental attunement nor does it require the caster to focus as much in invoking it.  Its ability comes directly from the latent aether within the caster.  Because of this the impact is greatly lower than other spells that require attunement whilst still drawing on the same amount of aether, therefore caution is advised when using this spell in succession.  To invoke this spell the caster must recite the incantation "pain".

"Well that explains why the damage is weak in comparison" she said to herself as she closed the book and placed it in her backpack.  She stretched her arms and then began to collect the remaining of her belongings and made for the exit.

Outside Reubemont had been waiting near Melanie's room for at least 10 minutes.  On opening the door to her room Melanie felt her heart leap to her throat on seeing him.  "Reubemont?  I was startled!  Wait...was you waiting outside my room?"

"Yes I... I was waiting so I could help you down the stairs" he replied.

"Riiiight... he was waiting outside my room."  Melanie put on a fake smile as she began walking down the hallway.  Reubemont noticed her smile didn't look at all natural and felt a cold rush through his body.  "Did I do something wrong?" he began to worry and doubt whether waiting for her outside her room was such a good idea after all.  Reubemont followed close by silently until they reached the top of the stairs.  He started to fumble nervously trying to put his arm around Melanie and hesitating.  "What should I do?  Should I try to help or will she get upset?"

Melanie sighed as she realised he was now acting nervously.  "Now I've gone and done it.  All he was doing was trying to help and now I've made him nervous by overreacting.  Besides how else am I going to get down the stairs if I can't do it by myself?"  She put on a proper smile and looked up at him.  "It's alright.  I know you're trying to help and I wasn't being greatful.  I'm sorry I made you feel unappreciated."  Melanie then motioned to the stairs.  "Shall we?"

Reubemont let out a sigh of relief and composed himself, then placed an arm around her shoulders and together they slowly descended the stairs to the inn area.  "I feel I must apologize.  I haven't had much experience with women other than my sister.  You remind me of her so much that I keep forgetting you're not her and that I shouldn't treat you in the same manner" he spoke as they began to approach the last few steps.

"You care a lot about your sister" Melanie replied.

"That I do.  She's all I have left."  Reubemont stopped at the bottom of the stairs and lowered his head.  "I'm sorry, I said too much."

Melanie started to feel a sharp pain in her head and her vision begin to cloud.  She raised a hand up against the side of her temples and grimaced.

"Brovola, are you alright?"  Reubemont's voice became distant and was instead replaced by another voice.  The world around her had completely distorted and changed to that of a different place.  Everything sounded and felt strange as if she was inside a movie.

"You must take them to safety.  Go to Ishgard, anywhere but here.  I'll come and find you when this is finally over" a man's voice spoke out.  Standing in front of her was an elezen woman with white hair and blue eyes wearing an elegant green dress and an elezen man with black hair and lilac eyes wearing a mixture of mail and leather armor.  In her arms was a baby girl and next to her a very young boy with white hair and lilac eyes.

The scene changed to Ishgard where the woman sat at a table with her head buried in her arms crying.  The baby girl was also crying in a crib nearby and the young boy was standing next to the woman tugging at her dress.  "Mommy, when is daddy coming home?" the boy asked in a sad voice.  "I'm sorry Reubemont.  Daddy will not be coming home."

The scene changed once again.  It was snowing in Ishgard and the woman was outside browsing some of the market stalls, her baby girl now having grown into an infant and the young Reubemont having aged by a couple of years.  The woman started to cough and shivver.  The young Reubemont looked up at her and tried to hug her hoping that even the smallest bit of warmth from his body would help her.

The scene changed once more to her taking her children through the snow.  Her skin had gone paler and she was looking exhausted as if she was about to collapse any moment.  "Where are we going?" the young Reubemont asked.  "To Idyllshire.  It's said to be more warmer there and they have medicine that can help mommy get better" she said trying to smile at her little boy.  She started to cough and held up a white lacy handkerchief to her mouth.  As she pulled it away there were spots of blood staining the handkerchief.  She quickly stuffed it into a pocket so her children wouldn't see.

Another scenario took place.  The woman's health had deteriorated and she was now lying in a bed, her skin was clammy and pale as snow and her eyes having sunken into their sockets.  She coughed and wheezed heavily.  "I don't have much time left.  Remember what I taught you Reubemont, pray take good care of your sister while I'm gone."

"I don't want you to go!" the young boy began to cry.  The woman looked at him trying to smile as she stroked away the tears from his face.  "My brave, sweet children...I love you both and no matter where I go I will always be with you."  The woman sighed as her eyes became heavy and closed.  Her chest lowered and her hand fell against the bed.  "Mommy, no..." the boy wept lowering his head and began to shake her arm.  "Wake up mommy, please wake up!"

The scene changed one more time.  Both Reubemont and his sister were back in Ishgard standing in front of a tall elezen man with a long white beard wearing white, blue and gold archbishop robes and carrying a tall white and gold staff.  Another elezen male with long white hair stood facing away from them wearing an ink blue and silver outfit made from a combination of metal and dragonscale.  On his back he carried a tall lance with spikes that resembled dragon wings stained with blood.  "And these young children are the latest victims of the dragonsong war, both their parents having been killed by the dragons" the archbishop said to the man in dragonscale armor.

"I see" the man said, a low growl was heard in his voice.  Melanie instantly recognised the voice.  "Estinien?!!"  Estinien turned around to face the children and lowered himself to their level.  His face was twisted and stern, his lips tightly pursed and his blue eyes sharp and cold with bitterness and a hunger for vengeance.  "The dragons will answer for what they did to my people and to your parents, this I swear" he said to them in a dark and husky voice.

"But that's not true, mommy didn't die to the dragons.  She was sick!"  The scene had changed again to Reubemont with his young sister who was looking confused and like she was about to cry and Reubemont holding onto her.  "We won't let that bishop and his lies tell us any different.  One day we will tell the truth and people will know the dragons weren't to blame."

"I miss mommy" the young girl started to sob.  "Me too Junnelle, me too" Reubemont hugged her.  "I promise I'll never leave you.  I'll become a paladin and protect you as I promised mother."

Everything began to distort around her and changed back to the inn.  The pain began to ease off and she could hear Reubemont's desperate voice again.  "Brovola!  Brovola, are you okay?"

Melanie looked up at Reubemont with sad eyes.  "I saw it all" she said, her voice starting to crack.

"Saw what?" Reubemont asked confused.

Melanie put her arms around him and held him tightly with tears starting to form in her eyes.  "I saw what happened to your parents.  How Thordan lied to Estinien and tried to blame it on the dragons."

"What...how could you possibly know about that?!" Reubemont gasped.

Melanie pulled herself away from Reubemont and dried her eyes trying to compose herself.  "It's a gift I have called the Echo.  It allows me to see both into the future and also into someone's past."

Reubemont was still a little confused.  "So, you're saying you saw into my past and saw my mother...?"

Melanie began wiping her eyes once more.  "I'm sorry if I made you feel violated.  Visions seem to take place either before a dangerous encounter or when someone starts thinking about their past and I don't know how to control it."

"I see...I think.  You don't need to apologize.  I probably would've told you about it eventually."  Reubemont started to ponder a little.  "A few days ago you stopped us from assaulting the goblin camp in Hammerlea, was that because you saw something then?"

Melanie nodded feeling uncomfortable as she recalled the event in her mind.  "Had we gone ahead we wouldn't have survived."

"Oh wow.  That sounds both handy and a little disturbing too if I think about it.  I can't imagine what it was you saw but I can tell by your eyes and the way your reacted that day it was quite horrifying.  I hate to ask this of you but knowing you have the gift of foresight then should you ever have concerns over which path we're following I won't doubt your word."

Melanie calmed down and nodded.  Reubemont looked around the different tables in the room and started to hum.  "Looks like the others didn't make it here yet, I wonder what's keeping them."

Both Reubemont's and Melanie's linkpearls started to chime.  Together they raised their hands to their ears and lightly touched their linkpearls.  "Oh good you're both up" Suyaya's voice was heard in their ears.  "Something's going down in the Twelveswood and I really think you should all come and investigate."

"Can you provide more details?  It would take a while to get there even by airship" Reubemont said.

"According to reports an undead knight known as Bockman has once again risen and is terrorising gleaners and merchants in Central Shroud.  Already there's been several adventurers and soldiers sent out to control the threat but few have returned with severe wounds and speaking of horrors awaiting anyone who's bold enough to try to challenge him.  I think we can probably handle it as a team, what do you think?"

Reubemont quickly glanced down at Melanie seeing her face writ with concern.  "We'll be down as soon as we can.  In the meantime keep us informed of the situation and if anything changes."

"All right, looking forward to your arrival."  Suyaya signed off and both Melanie and Reubemont lowered their hands.  Melanie started to feel knots in her stomach at the thoughts of going onboard another airship.

Reubemont could see Melanie was looking fretful and gently stroked her face with his palm.  "It's alright.  I'll be there with you and keep you safe" he said calmly.  Melanie nodded in agreement yet every bone in her body felt like it was shaking.  He took hold of her hand and walked to her towards the exit.  Melanie tried to swallow her nerves as they left the inn and headed into towards the inner part of the city where a lift nearby would them up to the airship landing.  "Airships, why does it have to be airships.  Why not underground railways or a ferry or even a horse and cart?  Just anything that doesn't involve flying!"

Melanie could feel her body resisting movement as they entered the lift.  She really did not want to ride an airship, not so soon after her last experience.  She felt the lift begin to move and squeezed Reubemont's hand tightly.

Atop the airship landing Melanie's body began tremble.  Reubemont was already at the ticket desk and booked a pair of tickets.  "Next flight out is in about 10 minutes" he said as he handed her one of the tickets.  He took hold of Melanie's hand as he noticed her trembling.  "Hey, it'll be alright.  Come, let's get ready to board" he said softly as he walked her to a pair of gates that led to the main docking area.  Each step Melanie took felt like she was dragging lead weights for legs and the more she could see the rooftops outside the more she felt her stomach leaping about inside her and her heart beating faster and harder that she could hear it pounding in her chest.  Reubemont could see she was frantic and placed an arm around her once she crossed the gate and held her close.  He'd been in this scenario many times in the past with his sister.  Melanie felt both a little awkward and thankful that someone was holding onto her.  The alternative would be her wandering around getting more and more worked up and wishing for someone to just hold her and let her know she was in safe hands.

10 minutes seemed to go by ever so slowly.  Melanie started to calm down and became curious about her surroundings.  She eyed an alcove nearby of what looked like a souvenier shop.  Various small boxes lined in front of the large counter with localised trinkets inside them.  At the far back were a few large crates, bags and vases containing local herbs, crops and oil, and on a smaller counter were some of the local wines and a few books about Uldah's history.  Melanie was tempted to walk over buy one of the wines but decided it probably wasn't a good idea to be drinking whilst flying even if it might help to calm her down, besides she hadn't had breakfast yet and drinking on an empty stomach was an even worse idea.

Melanie heard the whirring of propellors as an airship pulled in at the landing.  Several crates, barrels and bags were already lined up on the landing ready to be loaded into the hull by nearby workers.  Reubemont still holding on to Melanie carefully helped her board the airship.  Once they were on the top deck she looked down at the stairs that led into the airship hull.  "Aren't we going down there?" she asked.  Reubemont looked at the stairs.  "There?  That's where all the cargo is going.  It's not permitted for passengers to go down there."

Melanie started to panic wide-eyed.  "How am I going to ride this?  I can't stay on the top deck, I'll freak out!" she cried out.  Reubemont held both her shoulders and looked into her eyes.  "It's alright.  I'm here with you and I promise you you'll be safe.  Just hold on tight to me."  Melanie started to whimper fretfully and tremble once more.  She felt the airship jolt as it disembarked and quickly she wrapped her arms around Reubemont with a squeal and buried her face in his armor sobbing loudly.  Reubemont was stunned at how quickly she gripped onto him.  "She's even more fearful than Junnelle was and we've barely taken off."

The airship continued to scale upwards and pick up speed.  Melanie closed her eyes tight as she held onto Reubemont for dear life, her sobbing getting even louder.  The flight would take at least an hour and she was getting more and more panicky that he felt if he didn't do something soon her hyperventilating would cause her to pass out.  "What do I do?  What do I do?!"  Reubemont looked around desperately for something to try and help her calm down but there was nothing.  He looked down at her worried as her breathing had gone so much faster that she was starting to wheeze and her body feeling limp.  Quickly he knelt down to her level and cupped her face in his hands.  "Brovola!" he shook her gently trying to grab her attention.  When she wouldn't open her eyes he pulled her into him and held her tightly.  Just the warmth of his muscular body and the side of his face against hers was enough to slowly stir her back to her senses.  "This feels nice, so warm and comforting" she thought to herself and her sobbing began to calm down.  She lowered her head onto his shoulder and placed her arms around his back.

Reubemont continued to hold onto her a while longer until he was certain she had thoroughly calmed down.  He pulled himself away a little to check on her to make sure she didn't just pass out.  Her eyes dry from all the sobbing met his, her face soaked with tears.  He once again saw his sister in front of him and started to wipe the tears away from her face with a gentle smile.

Melanie continued gazing into his eyes astonished.  A tightness formed in her chest and throat and she felt like she was about to choke and break into tears again.  Nobody had ever been this understanding and kind to her, not even her own husband.  "Why was Tony never like this with me when I needed him?"  She started to recall the number of times Tony scorned her over her fears and made her feel unappreciated and helpless.  Like the time she was trapped upstairs in a strangers' house whilst house hunting because of the unusual design of a narrow and frighteningly steep staircase.  Tony scowled at her from the bottom of the staircase whilst the estate agent was on the phone calling for an ambulance.  "I don't believe you" he said to her in a disapproving tone, leaving her to sob at the top of the stairs.  Many other similar incidents followed where he'd abandon her to her own fears.  He would shake her off him if she tried to hug him and completely ignore her when she was in any kind of distress.

That was when she realised Tony no longer loved or cared for her and when she started to resent and no longer love him in return, yet they continued to remain married for another 15 years and for what...because divorce was too costly and too messy?  Because they believed that nobody else would be able to cope with them?  Whether or not that was true she'd felt it would've been better had they broken up years ago and sorted themselves out instead of being prisoner to a loveless relationship that left her feeling desperate, unloved and miserable for years.

Melanie sank back into Reubemont's arms again.  She no longer cared whether it was inappropriate behaviour or not.  She just wanted to feel safe and cared for.

Reubemont was surprised as she fell back into his arms.  "Is she still afraid?" he pondered to himself.  He looked down at her as she buried her head into his armor and started to sob gently.  "No, this is something else, something she hasn't yet told me.  Someone has done this to her, but why?"  Reubemont held her in his arms in a comforting embrace and rested his head against hers.  Melanie let out a calming sigh as she felt Reubemont's chest gently rise and fall and his arms holding onto her tightly.  For a time she completely forgot about her fears as she for the first time felt someone actually cared for her and wasn't just going to push her away when she was an inconvenience to them.

After some time Melanie's eyes started to wander and the sight of the sky would make her stomach leap, although this was now starting to be less frequent.  She was so glad they didn't have breakfast that morning else she might've embarrassed herself by throwing up all over Reubemont's armor.  She looked upwards and could see the clouds were still far up above her so they weren't very high up, at least not as high as an airplane.  She was now curious to just how high up they actually were.

"I'd like to try to see if I can look beyond the edge."

"You certain you're ready for that?  I wouldn't want you to scare yourself or pass out" Reubemont looked at her with concern.  Melanie nodded.  She had been psyching herself up for it the past several minutes believing that the more she got to see the better she'd be able to cope each time they'd take the journey.  "All right, but hold onto me tightly and let me know when you want to back up."

Reubemont rose to his feet then put an arm around Melanie's shoulders and held her close to him.  Melanie began to slowly move towards the edge of the airship.  She started to make out tree tops a little ways below them and quickly pulled at Reubemont's arm to signal to stop.  He stopped moving and watched her as she started to go into another panic and felt hesistant about keeping her so close to the edge.  She held tightly onto him, her body starting to shake and a feeling of butterflies in her stomach.

Moments went by without moving from their spot and Melanie had stropped shaking and began to breathe normally again.   She started to appreciate how beautiful the landscape looked from above.  If it weren't for Reubemont she probably would never have been able to board an airship let alone ride one by herself.  She could just make out in the distance what looked like a small clearing with a couple of wooden towers and buildings, several tents, and a large aetheryte crystal in the midst of it.  This was Bentbranch Meadows in Central Shroud.  Further up ahead was a small waterfall where she could see a number of large wooden structures surrounding it including a water wheel.  This was Gridania, their destination.  Melanie held on tightly to Reubemont once more, her stomach starting to knot and her heart starting to palpitate as she felt the airship dip downwards until they finally pulled into a landing area.

Reubemont still holding onto Melanie walked her onto a wooden platform shaded by a large canopy.  Behind her she could hear the roar of the waterfall that cascaded into a lake below them.  So many fragrances overwhelmed her senses.  The smell of fresh water, of trees, grass and various flowers, the scent of chocobos nearby, even the food and alcohol wafting from inside the wooden building in front of them.  It was so much more fresher than the scorching hot air of Ul'dah.  The sound of various song birds filled the skies and the excited purring of chocobos as their handlers came to feed them.  She was so overwhelmed over just how tranquil everything was here that she didn't even notice they were on a platform hovering halfway up a waterfall.

Inside the wooden building there were large arched stained glass windows at one end of the room.  The way the light shined through them sending mostly green and rainbow colours across the room made her gasp and her heart leap with awe.  It reminded her of her visit to the Crystarium.  At the other side of the room were smaller plain arched windows allowing normal light to shine through and break up the darkness.

Following up a long and winding staircase was the upper floor where the adventurers' guild known to the locals as the Carline Canopy resided.  Several round tables and small stools were scattered around and was completely packed by dozens of adventurers, many bearing solem and worried faces drinking ale and talking amongst themselves mostly about the threat down at Tam-Tara Deepcroft involving the being known as Bockman.  Since the walls surrounding the staircase had windows with a clear view of outside and the other side of the stairs had wooden railings Reubemont had to hold onto Melanie so she wouldn't have another panic attack.

"Oh oh, over here!" Suyaya's voice called out to them as she stood up on a stool and waved them over.  Holskwyb and Johna were also with her sat around a round table.  Reubemont and Melanie quickly shuffled through the crowd of adventurers and took a seat at the table with their comrades.

"I've never seen this place look so busy!" Reubemont gasped as he made himself comfortable and looked around the room.  "Must be because of what's happening with this Bockman."

"So many adventurers have been drawn to Gridania after the Twin Adder declared Tam-Tara as unsafe for exploration and set up a reward via the adventurers' guild to anyone who'll dispose of the threat" Suyaya replied.

"A reward eh?" Holskwyb leaned forward with interest.  "And you're certain you think we can handle this threat together?"

Suyaya nodded.  "Many of the adventurers who've shown up so far are more fresher than we are.  Other more seasoned adventurers talked of a dampening effect when entering the area surrounding Tam-Tara that made them more weaker and incapable of performing certain spells.  More so the ones who've tried were often alone wanting to claim all the rewards for themselves or only just met so they haven't had a chance to work together.  This is why I'm almost certain we can handle this together."

"Is there anything else you can tell us about Bockman, something that can help us when we go to face him?" Reubemont asked.

"From the ones who survived they spoke of the area swarming with undead.  Anyone who challenges Bockman would not only have to battle against those but he also summons more of them from the nearby tombs, enough to overwhelm even a handful of the bravest soldiers.  Alas the more who fall the more become part of Bockman's undead army."

Reubemont felt rather unsettled by the news, however Suyaya seemed all but confident they could overpower this Bockman and Holskwyb and Johna certainly seemed interested in the prospect of a handsome reward if they were to succeed.  He looked over to Melanie.  "What about you, do you sense anything that could indicate we wouldn't survive?"  Melanie shook her head.  Nothing so far had come into her mind that would show they would fail.  Suyaya, Johna and Holskwyb looked curiously at Reubemont.  "Oh, I forgot to mention.  Brovola has an ability that grants her the gift of foresight.  I'm guessing that without a vision means we'll likely succeed."

Nearby a highlander hyur and a roegadyn had been evesdropping on the group.  "You hear that?  She has a gift of foresight!" the roegadyn whispered to the human.  "If she's not sensing any danger then that must mean it's safe for us too.  That reward is as good as ours!"  Together they left the building and made their way outside the gates leading into the city.

"In that case I'm definitely up for the challenge, but not on an empty stomach!" Reubemont said enthusiastically.

Half an hour went by and the team now had full bellies and feeling ready to take on the world.  After attuning to Gridania's aetheryte they made their way outside into Central Shroud.  Following the path leading south-west towards Bentbranch Meadows, Suyaya began handing some advice around.  "The diremites around here can be a bit aggressive, but we should be fine if we stick to the road and avoid them" she said as they approached a small bridge over a gentle flowing stream.  The group stopped walking once they reached the other side of the bridge and Reubemont drew out his sword and shield.  Melanie peered around the group and saw ahead a diremite wandering on the path.

"We may have to fight this one" Reubemont said.  Melanie quickly looked around for another path but there was diremites spread around every possible route.  The group slowly began down the path bracing themselves for battle.  As if luck would find them the diremite moved off the road giving way for the group to walk by safely towards Bentbranch Meadows.

Bentbranch Meadows was a large outpost in the middle of Central Shroud although there wasn't really a great deal of things of interest here aside from nearby stables where chocobos were being raised and trained as carrier birds.  It was mostly wooden platforms and planks surrounding the base of what used to be an extremely large tree.  Melanie could not fathom just how large this tree would've been, never had there been records of such large trees existing on Earth, but like almost everything else that was in this universe seemed to be excessively large as if it were meant for a race at least 3 times taller.  In the center of the tree base a tall aetheryte hovered and rotated above a stone fountain.  "Let's attune ourselves in case we need to come back here later" Reubemont sheethed his weapons and walked the group towards the aetheryte.  Together they all reached out and started to focus.  Streams of aetheric light stretched from their hands to the aetheryte causing it to pulse in response.

Satisfied they were all attuned they began heading southwards leaving Bentbranch Meadows behind them until they reached a split in the path.  Eastwards led to the Mirror Planks Docks and into South Shroud whilst westwards led towards the Tam-Tara Deepcroft.  Nearby was a wooden tower with a couple of Wood Wailer sentries stationed outside.  On seeing the group move towards Tam-Tara one of them, a miqo'te, immediately ran after them.

"Halt adventurers!  Don't you know about the dangers of what lies down there?" she called out standing in front of them with her arms outstretched to her sides.

"As a matter of fact we do, and we intend to put an end to that danger" Reubemont said as the group stopped before her.

"You're mad!  You're ill equipped.  Several have already made attempts and very few have come back alive.  You'll just add your numbers to the undead.  Just moments ago a hyur and a roegadyn went into the deepcroft convinced they'd be the ones to slay the threat.  They haven't been seen since.  I highly doubt they are still among the living."

Melanie remembered hearing them talking back at Gridania.  Whilst they were whispering quietly enough to each other that nobody else could hear them Melanie with her miqo'te ears was able to hear every word yet she brushed it off and focussed on her comrades.  "Oh no, they really went ahead!  I should've tried to stop them."  She lowered her head sadly when she could hear a voice in the distance.  "Please, someone, help!"  The voice was that of the human from earlier and was very faint that nobody else could hear yet she was able to hear it.  She looked down the path desperately.  Reubemont could see Melanie was eager to press on and nodded to the sentry.  "We may not be equipped like soldiers and brave heroes, but we do have each other and I put my full trust in my comrades.  Pray, allow us to pass so we can put an end to this threat."

The miqo'te sentry shook her head and stepped aside.  "Don't say I didn't warn ya" she said as they walked onward.

Down the cobbled path towards Tam-Tara the air started to feel different.  Melanie could detect the smell of blood and death.  Once more she could hear the voice calling out only it was now close enough the rest of her comrades could also hear it.  "Anybody, help me please!" the voice cried out weakly and desperately.  Ahead of them they could see a highlander hyur male crawling on the ground.  The group ran towards him and reached him seconds after he collapsed unconscious.  He had horrendous gashes all over his body, his stomach had been sliced open and pools of blood had already been gushing out onto the path where he crawled from.  Suyaya quickly pulled out her branch and began reciting a spell.  Aether poured into the unfortunate man's body sealing his wounds.  The man's eyes failed to open even after she finished reciting and lowered her hands.  "It's no use, he's gone" she said remorsefully.

"Who dares to intrude upon my presence?!!" a loud and dark voice was heard inside the crypt that led to Tam-Tara Deepcroft.  Everyone rose to their feet and looked deep inside the crypt.  Shadows moved around accompanied by the sounds of bones clicking against each other and unearthly screams and laughter.  As they were about to approach the entrance Melanie started to feel dizzy and her head started to ache.  "Brovola?  Reubemont, wait!" Holskwyb called out.  Reubemont turned around seeing Melanie grimace and clutch her head.  "It's a vision" he said as he rushed to her aid.

The world around Melanie began to swim and multiple scenes from inside the crypt began to play out, each one with a different ending.  So many of them showed their failed attempts at defeating the abominations awaiting them except for one.  She shook her head as the scenarios stopped playing.  "Is everything all right?  What did you see?" Reubemont asked her.

"We must follow my lead if we're to succeed" she said to her comrades.  "Reubemont, you'll need to attack Bockman and make sure he stays focussed on you.  Holskwyb, you'll need to assault the skeletons with myself.  Suyaya, try to keep Reubemont healed up as best you can.  Johna, you'll be assisting Reubemont in taking Bockman down."  Everyone nodded, they then drew out their weapons and walked forwards into the crypt.

"Come adventurers and join me as one of my undead minions!" the deep voice chuckled loudly.  Inside the crypt was dimly lit by a number of small stone braziers.  Several cadavers wandered around whilst standing in the middle was a tall and bulky dullahan covered head to toe in a dark steel armor single handedly wielding a huge wide sword that was even taller than he was.  "We'll see who has the last laugh, hyahh!!!" Reubemont yelled as he rushed in and struck against Bockman.  Everyone assumed positions with Melanie and Holskwyb taking down the cadavers whilst Reubemont and Johna assaulted Bockman.  The cadavers easily broke apart to Holskwyb's fists and Melanie's fire magic whilst Johna's arrows pierced through Bockman's armor with little resistance.  Reubemont blocked most of the attacks from Bockman whilst continuing to taunt him.  His bronze shield was taking a hefty beating but managed to keep him from being pulverized by Bockman's huge sword.

Bockman seeing that his opponents were proving to be more than a match for him began to raise his other hand.  A dark spell was woven and more cadavers began to rise from the earth whilst Bockman laughed hysterically.  Holskwyb and Melanie quickly turned their attention to them and began culling them down.  It didn't take long and Bockman was starting to show signs of weakening.  Reubemont began to rain down a flurry of attacks on him determined to smash through his armor plating.  He struck a piece that broke off and landed on the floor.  Reubemont gasped as he saw underneath the armor there was nothing.  Bockman started to laugh again at the futility of Reubemont's attack.  Reubemont stared into the darkness inside the armor and noticed something.  High up inside the armor there was a blue glow from what looked like a floating orb inside it with a tail.  Reubemont used all of his might to thrust his sword up inside the gap in the armor and upwards.  Bockman let out a loud unearthly shriek and fell to his knees.  Reubemont pulled his sword out and smashed it up against Bockman's chest, causing another piece it to break away and expose the abomination inside it.

"It's a revenant!  With me my friends, aim all your attacks here!" he called out to his comrades.  Everyone rushed in to Reubemont's side and began to focus all their attacks on the exposed revenant which screamed agonizing shrieks until its light went out and collapsed.  The revenant's body began to dissipate causing the armor to fall apart in a heap.  Reubemont collapsed to his knees gasping for air whilst everyone else was doubled over panting.  "Is it over?" Suyaya asked.  Melanie tried to nod but was too exhausted.  After taking a few moments Reubemont lowered his head in prayer.  "May you find rest in the Underworld."  He was about to stand up when he noticed something else inside the armor, something shiny.

"What is this?" he asked as he reached into the armor.  His hands felt something solid, cold, and almost cylindrical with smooth edges.  He pulled his hand out of the armor holding onto a large piece of crystal that had a golden glow.  Melanie gasped as she recognised it instantly.  "It's a crystal of light!" she gasped excitedly.

"Crystal of light?" Reubemont looked up at her quizzically.  "Argh!"  Reubemont dropped the crystal and clamped his head grimacing.  The others began to panic.  "What's happening?" Suyaya gasped.  Holskwyb was about to grab the crystal and throw it away when Melanie stopped her.  "Don't!" she cried out.  "This is meant to happen.  What he is experiencing right now is Hydaelyn's call.  That crystal is what will protect him as one of her chosen.  In other words he's been chosen to become a Warrior of Light!"

"A Warrior of Light?" Holskwyb asked surprised.  She backed away from Reubemont still looking concerned for him.  Reubemont eventually stopped grimacing and looked at everyone with astonishment.  "I saw her" he whispered.  "First it was a star shower, then I saw a large crystal and heard her calling to me..."

"Hear... Feel... Think" both Melanie and Reubemont said together.

"How do you know all this?  Is this how you got your gift?" Suyaya asked Melanie.

Melanie reached into her robe and pulled out a crystal similar to Reubemont's only hers was pure white.  Reubemont reached over and picked up his crystal and placed it next to Melanie's.  "It's a different shade, what does that mean?" Holskwyb asked.

"I don't know" Melanie replied.  "There are various other crystals, each has a different colour.  I don't know their specific meaning other than to own one grants you with Hydaelyn's blessing which protects you from primal influences and grants you with the gift known as The Echo."

"I've heard of The Echo" Suyaya pondered.  "Yes, I remember!  There's a band of people who go by the name of, um, the Sirens?  Cyclones?  But anyways, these people along with the Champion of Eorzea would travel all over Eorzea defeating primals.  That is why she was also known as The Primal Slayer."

"You know your history" Melanie smiled.  "She has no idea she's talking about me.  I wish I could tell them but I cannot."

"How did you manage to come across your crystal then?" Reubemont asked Melanie curiously.

"Err, I inherited mine a long time ago" Melanie replied trying to think fast.  "I don't exactly remember how it happened but like you I heard Hydaelyn's voice speak to me and since then I've been having these visions."

"So what happens if I was to be in possession of the crystal, would I too receive this blessing?" Holskwyb asked.

"You can try it if you want" Reubemont said handing the crystal over to her.  Holskwyb took the crystal and held onto it for several seconds bracing herself but nothing seemed to happen.  She shook her head and handed the crystal back to Reubemont.  "I guess it only works for the person who found it first" she said a little disappointed.

Reubemont stuffed the crystal inside a pocket hidden within his garments and pushed himself onto his feet.  "I guess we're done here then" he said as he dusted his clothes down with his hands.  "We should let the sentries know that the threat is over before they think we've joined the Underworld."

The group left the crypt together.  The body of the hyur who was left outside was still lying down, his skin having turned white and his clothes completely soaked in blood.  Melanie found it strange how everything else they defeated would dissipate into aether yet a persons' body would still remain as it were.

As they approached the wooden tower the sentries looked surprised to see them still in one piece.  "You're still here!" the miqo'te sentry gasped.  "Does that mean the threat no longer exists?"

Reubemont nodded.  "It's been taken care of.  You should find there's a body further down the path that's in need of burial."

"Congratulations young adventurers!  You have rid the Twelveswood off a formidable fiend.  I do believe I owe you each a reward for your heroics" a young man wearing a fancy green, red and white adventurer's outfit and a red leather hat stepped from inside the tower.  In his hands he held a large purse and began to empty its contents into each of their hands.  As they pocketted the gil Melanie looked up at the miqo'te sentry and noticed the look on her face.  It wasn't the look of gratitude but one of hatred.  Reubemont looked up to see Melanie staring at the sentry and turned his gaze over to her.  "Gaaah!" he cried out along with Melanie as they both doubled over holding their heads.

The world around them began to change.  They were in a different part of Gridania where the miqo'te was with another girl who looked similar to her.  They both looked desperate and fatigued, begging to the other citizens for help but being ignored.  A couple of elezen men dressed in wood wailer gear scoffed at them.  "Move away swine, you're in our way!" one of them pushed the younger miqo'te aside that she fell over.  "Dihna!"  The older miqo'te ran over to the younger miqo'te and tried to help lift her back onto her feet again.  "Have you no mercy?!" the older miqo'te cried out to them.  The elezen men stopped in their tracks.  "Surely you can see we are hungry and desperate!  We've tried to find work here but nobody would take us.  We've begged for help from your piers but they've outright refused without reason.  What else are we to do?  You would have us freeze to death and starve?"  The elezen snorted at them, "Perhaps you should, then we wouldn't have to put up with people like you!" one of them shouted back without even looking at them.

The scene changed to the girls now out in the Twelveswood watching a small herd of deer.  The oldest of them had a bow and arrow readying in her hands.  "It's either this or we starve to death.  Those Gridania bastards don't care whether we live or die, but I choose to live" she whispered to Dihna.  "So, you're willing to break rules then?" a voice purred from behind them.  The girls swiftly turned around to see another miqo'te female with darker skin with war paint streaked across her face and wearing leather tribal hunting clothes.  "Who are you?!" the elder miqo'te pointed her bow at her.  "I'm a friend as long as you don't point that arrow at me" the dark skinned miqo'te replied.  "If you'll hear me out I know of a place where you can stay, be well fed, and never be judged for simply being who you are.  But first a little test to prove whether or not you'll fit in with us..."

The scene changed to deep in the Twelveswood where the miqo'te was now with several other miqo'te wearing tribal hunting clothes inside a makeshift tent.  "What do you mean she's dead?!" she shouted to another who was standing in front of her looking downwards remorsefully.  "They came from nowhere.  One minute we were together and the next we were ambushed.  There were too many of them to fight back.  We tried to separate in hopes they'd split apart but they instead went for Dihna and then..." the other miqo'te held her head down further unable to look her in the eyes.

The scene changed once more to where she was standing over a table looking down at a book and a collection of dark steel armor.  "Let's see how the Wood Wailers handles this once I unleash this upon them" she hissed in a sour voice, her face twisting menacingly.

The scene changed to inside the crypt where she stood in front of the armor worn by Bockman.  "Those Gridanian bastards will pay dearly for murdering my sister" she said as she raised the book open in front of her and began chanting some undeciperable language.  "Rise once more and reclaim your place in the Twelveswood!" she finally chanted.  A whirl of dark mist began to form around the armor as it started to animate.  The miqo'te quickly closed the book and ran out of the crypt.

The world started to swirl once more and they were back with their comrades.  Reubemont grit his teeth and drew out his sword and shield and aimed them at the miqo'te sentry.  "It was you!" he shouted to her.  "You were the one who summoned Bockman from the Lifestream!"

The miqo'te sentry looked shocked.  "Me?  Why would you say that?  I wouldn't do such a thing!"

"I saw it too" Melanie said holding her staff in front of her.  "You used an incantation from a book whilst summoning Bockman back to the realm of the living.  It was your intention to cause chaos among the Wood Wailers after they mistreated you and took the life of your sister."

The miqo'te stared at her with a surprised look, then her look was replaced with a sneer.  "Fine!" she said angrily.  "You may have caught me but you will never stop our cause!  The Coeurlclaw tribe will take over these forests as their own!"  She proceeded to run when a whistle was heard in the air followed by an arrow embedding itself into the miqo'te's back.  Melanie looked behind her to see one of the sentries holding an empty bow in his hands glaring angrily at the miqo'te's body.  "As with all those who consort with the Coeurlclaws, the punishment for consorting the enemy is death."

Melanie lowered her staff and closing her eyes tightly looked away from the miqo'te's corpse.  This wasn't what she expected to happen.  They didn't have to kill her like this, not after what she and her sister went through.  "Thank you adventurers once again.  You discovered a leak in our establishment and rid our forests of 2 major threats.  Had we known she was a member of the Coeurlclaws we would've executed her on the spot instead of recruiting her as one of us."  Reubemont sheethed his sword and placed the shield back onto his back.  He took one last look at the miqo'te's corpse with pity and remorse.  This didn't sit well with him either even if she was from a tribe of criminals.  "Come, let's return back to Gridania" he said to his comrades in a slightly despondent tone.  The group slowly and silently followed Reubemont back on the path being careful not to walk over the miqo'te's body.

Whispers Falling Silently

It was late evening by the time Melanie turned in at The Hourglass.  The day had gone pretty smoothly with her comrades.  Johna, Holskwyb and Suyaya had already taken the next airships leading to their respective cities in order to report in with their mentors.  Reubemont also had split off hours ago to the gladiators' guild, which left Melanie to report in with Cocobuki.  Cocobuki was more than impressed with Melanie's progress that he even went as far as handing her a unique robe and a staff crafted from bone and marble.  "Since your abilities to weave magic are growing so quickly you'll need something more than just a simple sceptre.  This staff will allow you to channel in more aether for much more devastating attacks, and where you'll be venturing next you're going to need it."

The robe was made of a grey linen material with a black cloak over the top with soft leather cuffs, collar and shoulderpads.  A large metal amulet was hammered into the leather collar but appeared to have no other use other than as decor.  Whilst it wasn't entirely hideous it wasn't something Melanie would've chosen, however it was free and judging by the material was more comfortable and less scratchy than the previous robe Melanie had been wearing the past few days and no doubts would help her remain more focussed during her spell weaving and less so on the number of times she wanted to badly scratch her back.

Even though just a couple of days had gone by Melanie could already tell her magic was becoming stronger the more time she spent practicing and studying.  When she wasn't with her comrades fighting random beasts outside she was either practicing her magic on target dummies outside of Scorpion Crossing or studying inside the thaumaturges' guild.  She was also picking up on the Eorzean alphabet more quickly to where she could read basic words without having to translate it in her head.  Thanks to her studies she got to learn more about the different methods in how aether was used not just in combat but also for other tasks such as teleportation magic and even for something as simple as making a bowl of soup.  It was a lot to take in and surprising just how much these people depended on aether considering how finite it was and how dangerous it was when misused.

Sitting on the floor practing her meditation she began to sense something amiss, as if someone was watching her or trying to speak to her.  She could hear it, a sound inside her head that was so quiet it was like a whisper that was barely audible.  She quickly stood up and looked around the room.  "I know you're here.  Why don't you show yourself?  Talk to me!  What is it you want?" she said outloud.  The sound stopped suddenly.  Melanie remained standing for a couple of minutes but nothing else took place.  She walked over to her bed and lay herself down, her head resting heavily on the pillow feeling frustrated as well as fearful.  Who could it possibly be she wondered.  Hydaelyn?  An Ascian?  Maybe even Feo Ul?  Or perhaps...

Melanie quickly brushed aside the idea that this was all some imaginary recreation and that someone was trying to wake her.  It felt too real and far too linear.  Whilst she had many dreams that felt real enough there was always clues they were dreams such as not being able to taste food, random events merging into her dreams, or irregular patterns in things such as books and posters.  What was happening was more vivid than any dream and didn't have any tell tale signs of it being imaginary.

Melanie stopped trying to think and turned onto her side readying to sleep.  Whatever was trying to reach out had cleary given up.  She needed to be fresh for the next morning so she could squeeze in some extra study time before meeting with her comrades.  Time was ticking, her Scion friends were still trapped on the First and this realm was still without its champion.

The Little Swat

Dusk was already settling over Ul'dah.  A young student was sitting over a small pile of books on a table with a small lantern quietly studying.  She hadn't studied like this in a long time, not since she left college all those years ago.  With there being no such things as computers or televisions on this world to occupy her time and her new friends having already turned in for the night and feeling restless herself she felt the only thing left for her to do was to study.  Though before when she was on Earth she struggled to read the Eorzean alphabet, somehow she could now read it as fluently as if she'd known it all her life.  Whilst she was taking notes however she failed to realise that she was still writing in her own language.

Cocobuki eyed his student from the back of the hall and slowly made his way to the table and took a seat opposite her.  "I'm not interrupting am I?" he asked gently.  "Not at all" Melanie replied taking her eyes from the books and glancing a smile at Cocobuki.

Cocobuki looked down at the piece of paper Melanie had been jotting down on.  "What kind of language is that?" he asked curiously.

"Oh, that's the language of my people.  I guess I didn't notice that I was transcribing in my own language."

"How very strange" Cocobuki mused looking at the strange curvature of each letter.  "By the way I take it you've had a chance to practice outside with your magic?"

"I have.  It feels so natural to me now and I've only been at it for less than a day.  I feel like I could just gobble up everything in these books and already be able to use the spells written in them, that is once I can fluently read from them and not having to translate everything word for word.  Take a look at this."  Melanie fumbled inside her satchel which was on the ground by her feet and removed from it a small lightning crystal.  She then stood up and placed the crystal on the floor a few feet away and unclipped her sceptre from her robes.  After a few seconds of meditation she pulled back her sceptre whilst thinking the word "shock."  The air around her began to crackle and become static as she readied her sceptre and thrust it forwards towards the crystal.  A small ball of lightning harmlessly sped its way from her sceptre towards the crystal filling it with an electrified charge.

Cocobuki clapped his hands excitedly at Melanie.  "Bravo!  You've mastered the art of lightning magic and without even speaking the incantation outloud.  You have learned a lot in just a very short space of time.  You're just like she was when she first entered my halls all those years ago, a bright student who mastered thaumaturgy within just a few months.  It's like being here with you now I've gone back in time to those days.  I have no doubts in your capabilities that you'll reach those peaks in the same manner, if not faster."

Melanie felt a bubbly warm feeling at Cocobuki's words, however she also felt a little guilty for what she was about to say next.  Picking up the crystal from the floor and placing it back in her satchel she sat back down at the table.  "I must admit becoming a thaumaturge was never really something I was interested in learning.  To me it was just another challenge to overcome and in the end it just didn't feel like my style.  That's why I sought to become a red mage.  I much preferred the versatility of being able to both provide as a damage dealer and support as required and to increase my survivability when on my own rather than having to constantly run away every time things got a little too spicy.  It's something I still desire to become."

Cocobuki nodded with understanding.  "The path to a red mage is always open to you, as is any other profession that you may wish to persue.  The reason you're currently here in the meantime is to learn how to recognise and manipulate aether, though I daresay you're mastering this very well that you might not even be needing my help for long."

"I know what you're saying, but so far from the books I've read they only teach about thaumaturgy and the history of the magi and why black magic is a forbidden art.  I haven't yet come across anything that teaches about the different forms of aether.  All I know is how to manipulate bolts of aspected aether.  I know there's much more than this and that it doesn't just require invoking magic from latent aether, so how will I persue other professions if that's all I'll know?"

Cocobuki hummed for a few moments.  It was true that different types of magic required different methods of manipulating aether.  Though it had just been a day she was showing promising signs already and he felt that perhaps just knowing about the different types of aether could be helpful to her.  His eyes scoured the top shelves of books in the alcove next to them until he laid eyes on one.  "There, 3rd row at the top and 4th book to the right.  This should teach you all you need to know about the different types of aether."  Melanie looked up and counted 4 books to the right on the 3rd shelf and pulled down an old book with a red leathery cover titled "Aetheric Arts."  She flicked the book open and began to scour through some of the pages.  There was some depictions of different types of aether and descriptions on how they were used.  "I'll leave you to it.  Try not to stay up too late or burn yourself out with too much reading."  Cocobuki took his leave as Melanie sat back down and returned to page 1 of the book.

"This book explains the various ways in which aether manifests itself and how it can be used in different types of magic.  Aether is in all things living including the star itself.  If a being becomes void of aether they would cease to live, as so would the star itself cease to provide life if it too becomes void of aether.  This is why it is important to know how to use aether when invoking different types of magic to avoid draining it both from one self and the star as different forms of magic uses different methods of manipulation to only draw upon that which is required at minimal cost."

Melanie was suddenly stirred as she felt someone shaking her shoulder.  "Miss Brovola, are you awake?"  Melanie grunted and peeled her face from the book.  It was now morning and there was a slight crick in her neck from having been bent forward over the table.  "I'm sorry to have awoken you.  You've been here all night and we were starting to get a little worried."

Melanie rubbed her eyes and looked across at Yayake who she recognised as one of the workers behind the reception.  "Ungh, what time is it?" she asked in a sleepy voice.

"It's just gone past 10 morning."

"What?  Oh no, I was supposed to meet my friends for breakfast!" Melanie suddenly jolted out of her seat, grabbed her satchel and started to run from the hall.  Yayake was taken aback a little with surprise then turned her eyes to the table Melanie was sat at.  "What's this?" she asked herself as she looked at the papers Melanie had been using to take notes with.  "What strange handwriting."

Melanie hurriedly sped down the streets hoping she hadn't missed her rendevous with her new comrades.  People looked on bemused as she raced past them until she finally reached the doors into The Quicksand and burst through them.  A few patrons inside gave her a surprised look and then resumed their conversations.  Melanie's eyes scoured the room until she spyed upon her comrades gathered around a table.  Johna and Holskwyb were with them this morning.  "Ah, she's finally here!" Reubemont said cheerfully.

"I'm sorry I'm late.  I was up all night studying" Melanie flustered as she found herself an empty seat at the table and placed her satchel next to it.

"No worries.  Here, I think you could use one of these" Suyaya said with a smile handing a small white mug over to Melanie.  Melanie nodded greatfully and raised the cup to her lips.  The rich aromas of a well roasted coffee reached her nostrils.  It was unlike any other coffee she had tasted, it was nutty with a taste like black treacle whilst not being as sweet.  She could already feel it working its magic as she became more alert and taking her seat she slowly downed the coffee enjoying its rich and intense flavours.

"As I was explaining to the others we think today would be best spent honing more of our skills outside near Hammerlea, the same place we were at yesterday.  The more we are capable of exploring the better, then our adventures can truely begin.  What say you Brovola, you up to the task?"

Melanie placed her now empty coffee onto the table and nodded eagerly towards Reubemont.  She wasn't sure if it was just from the excitement of adventure or the coffee that made her feel so eager.

"Most excellent" Reubemont smiled.  "And now with these new set of arms I should be more capable of holding my ground against those coblyns."  Melanie peered around the table to catch sight of Reubemont's new weaponry.  On his back was now a hoplon made of pure bronze.  His sword had also been upgraded to a much more longer and sturdier looking bronze blade with a bone handle wrapped tightly in leather.  "It's going to take me a little time to get used to wielding such a blade.  It's less bulky than the last one but I feel this will glide through things so much easier."

"There's only one way to find out" Holskwyb said with a mischievous grin.  Reubemont nodded with a smile.  "We all ready to begin?  Then let's head out."  Everyone took hold of their belongings and began to make their way out of The Quicksand.

It only took roughly 20 minutes for the group to reach their destination.  Once more they stood in the opening near the large hammers.  The coblyns had multiplied and more earth elementals had also entered the area no doubts drawn in by a dust storm that had taken place overnight.  Reubemont drew his sword and shield ready for battle and nodded to his comrades.  Everyone took position drawing their weapons and waited for Reubemont to give the order to fight.

What felt like hours passed in mere moments.  The coblyns had been dramatically reduced in number, their corpses dissipating into aether.  The elementals had also been reduced to just a small handful which were now spread out and no longer bothering the group in their training.  A few buzzards also tried to pit themselves against the group after smelling blood but they too were slain and reduced to aether.  The group reassembled together full of high spirits.  "No, please, leave me alone!" a voice called nearby.  The group turned around to see a helpless merchant being assaulted by a pack of goblins in the near distance.  The merchant dropped his wares on the ground and fled whilst the goblins jeered at him and began diving the spoils among themselves.  Reubemont scowled angrily.  "I think it's high time we taught those goblins a lesson."  He then turned to Melanie.  "What say you Brovola, have any doubts before we proceed?"  Melanie looked at the goblins as they kicked aside the now empty crates and bags the merchant left behind.  No new visions came to her so it was all on them whether or not they intervened, and right now she was feeling just as furious as Reubemont.

Over at the goblin encampment the goblins were showing off to each other their moves and spoils and gloating over their victory.  An arrow sped through the air and landed in the middle of the encampment startling them to their feet.  "Psssh...koooh!" one of them grunted and looked around.  Johna grinned from behind a rock as he aimed another arrow in their direction which whizzed over their heads and embedded itself into a nearby tent.  "Ooh, gobbie want more clink clink, but gobbie too much stink stink!" he taunted.  Enraged the goblins began to chase after him and Johna raced back to the road where his friends were awaiting him.  The goblins stopped upon seeing the larger group in front of them.  They looked at each other and nodded as if agreeing to fight.  Blades began swinging, elements and arrows began flying.  The goblins were taking a heavy battering whilst Suyaya kept on top of restoring her comrades' health.  One of them stepped backwards and began to fumble around his backpack for an explosive but couldn't find one.

"Yoo hoo, looking for one of these?"  Holskwyb grinned from afar with a live explosive in her hand and hurled it at the goblin.  The explosion sent the goblin flying through the air and landing defeated in a heap.  The other goblins were quickly cut down and their corpses began to dissipate into aether.  The group cheered on in their victory at ridding the locals from the goblin threat.

"That was amazing!" a voice was heard from behind them followed by the cheers of several workers who had been watching the battle.  "We only just received new cogs this morning.  Had those goblins gotten their hands on them, and rest assured they would have, we'd not be able to continue working the hammers until next week.  How can we repay you?"

Reubemont shook his head and smiled.  "There's no need for payment.  We did this because we chose to, because it was the right thing to do."

"No, I insist" the worker pressed on and from his pockets he withdrew a small handful of gil.  "It's not much but if you hadn't shown up when you did it would've cost us much more to replace any lost parts."  He then placed the coins into Reubemont's hands and bowed.  Reubemont bowed back as the worker returned to his station.

"Well, I daresay this helps pay off for the new weaponry I bought earlier.  Here, let's divide this."  Reubemont counted the coins and split them up as evenly as he could between his comrades.  It was only a small amount of gil, barely enough to buy a coffee with, but it was still gratifying.

Melanie suddenly started to feel faint and collapsed to her knees.  Everyone watched her shocked not knowing what to do.  "Oh no, not again" Suyaya gasped as she helped Melanie to stand up again.  "What did I tell you about draining your aether?"

Melanie shook her head.  "No, it's not my aether this time, it's..."  A long and loud grumble was heard from Melanie's tummy.  Everyone fell silent and then began to laugh.  "Oh of course, you didn't have any breakfast with us this morning!" Suyaya sighed with relief.  "Aren't you carrying anything with you that you can eat?"

"As a matter of fact I do" Melanie replied.  Reubemont looked over to the now empty goblin encampment which still had a campfire blazing away.  "We can go take a seat over there at the encampment and rest a few whilst Brovola eats" he said pointing towards the campfire.  The group nodded and made their way over and sat around the campfire whilst Melanie dug around in her satchel looking for some food.  Inside she found what appeared to be a few platefuls of apple pies.

"Ooh, those look delicious!" Suyaya said as she eyed the pies.

"Would you like some?  I have plenty here for all of us" Melanie said.  Everyone huddled in closer around the campfire as she started handing around plates until they all had one each and began tucking in.

"Wow!" Johna exclaimed after biting into the pie.  "These are even better than the specials at The Quicksand."

Reubemont took a bite into the pie and gasped.  He looked at the delicate flakey pastry filled with the sweet tasting pieces of apple complimented by the punch of cinnamon as if he was about to cry.  "These remind me of my mothers' apple pies.  I forgot how much I missed her cooking."  He began to smile and took another bite from the pie.

"These are amazing.  Where did you get these from?" Holskwyb asked.

"I made these" Melanie replied.  Everyone looked up at Melanie in disbelief.

"You made them?" Reubemont gasped.  "Wow, well now I know who to ask when inviting for dinner."

With full bellies once more the team began readying to take to the road again when Melanie heard a groan from behind a nearby tree.  She began to investigate whilst everyone else started to group together.  "Gasp!"  Melanie looked down to see a mangled goblin from earlier trembling from shock and fear at the sight of her and breathing heavily with a loud wheeze.  She knelt down to the goblin who looked up weakly at her with its wide eyes.  "Pssshkoh...uplander come kill Slashvix?  Slashvix...afraid."

Reubemont having seen Melanie wander over to the goblin drew his sword from his sheeth.  "Let me put him out of his misery" he said readying to slay the goblin.  Melanie raised a hand to him to stop him.  "Slashvix, my friends here can help you but only if you promise to no longer attack people.  You don't have to be afraid of us.  We don't have to fight and kill each other.  Will you at least be willing to agree?"

Slashvix continued to tremble and breath heavily.  "Slashvix and uplanders...friends?"

"Yes, we can be friends!  I cannot speak for all humanity but you and I can be friends.  There are many other goblins who are friends with people and live among them.  You too can join them, that's if you choose to."

"Pssshkoh...Slashvix...accept.  Slashvix and uplander...friends."

Melanie motioned Suyaya over to them.  "Please, can you help him?" she pleaded.  Suyaya looked down at Slashvix nervously.  "Are you sure this is wise?" she asked.  Melanie nodded to her.  Reubemont still holding onto his sword watched as Suyaya held onto her branch and placed a hand over the goblin's body and started reciting a spell.  Melanie rose to her feet and backed away whilst Suyaya invoked her magic.  A light emitted from Suyayay's hand as aether poured into Slashvix's body sealing up his wounds.  After a few moments he raised himself slowly to his feet and looked up at Melanie.  "Slashvix keep promise.  Slashvix seek friendly gobbie...friend of uplanders."

Melanie smiled at him.  "Safe travels Slashvix" she said.  With a nod Slashvix turned away and wandered off.

Reubemont sheethed his sword and looked at Melanie impressed.  "You really reached out to him.  I hope he finds these other goblins you mentioned.  I remember hearing of a small group of them all the way out in Dravania.  How did you know they existed?"

"I once travelled there a long time ago and came across them in my journeys" Melanie replied as she dusted the earth from her robes.

"I see... well than, shall we continue onwards with our friends" Reubemont said making his way back to his comrades who were watching in surprise as the goblin disappeared from view.

Melanie started to rejoin her comrades when she heard her own voice speak out inside her head, "I see, like me you care deeply for others."  Melanie looked around and down to Suyaya.  "Did you say something?" she asked her.  Suyaya shook her head.  Melanie took another look around then shrugged her shoulders and rejoined her comrades.

An Exarch's Concerns

Back on the First atop the crystal tower the Scions were gathered with the Exarch mulling over what had occurred the past few days.  Thancred exchanged hands with Urianger and quietly took him aside to where the others couldn't hear him.  "I take it you made the proper arrangements?" he said quietly.  Urianger nodded.  "She's in safe hands with our trusted allies back at Ahm Araeng.  They'll make certain to alert us with due haste should aught change during our absence" Urianger replied.  Thancred nodded satisfied and they rejoined their fellow scions in the middle of the Ocular.

"It is good of you to join us Urianger" the Exarch said as he finally laid eyes upon his old friend and accomplice.  "Likewise" he replied bowing his head respectfully.

"To brief you upon recent events, our friend M'leineya has revealed to us that she is a stranger from a distant world, one that is not part of the Source or any of its shards, and that her interactions have been done from said world and were being reflected here through what I can only assume and describe as some kind of avatar, although we've yet to determine if that's what she is."

Urianger gasped with his eyes and mouth wide open.  "I told you this would be interesting" Thancred leaned towards him with his arms folded.

"By the gods, another star?" Urianger exclaimed in astonishment.  The Exarch nodded.  "And where art our companion now?"

"She returned back to the First in order to relearn her role as the Warrior of Light and Darkness.  Suffice to say having not truely walked among us until recent she has never used magic nor wielded a sword, so she now seeks to attain that position in order to resume her journey in person."

"According to her it was Hydaelyn that brought her here, and that through her arrival brought on the phenomena know as "The Awakening"" Y'shtola added.

Urianger lowered his head, his face twisted in disbelief as he tried to take in everything that was being said.  Suddenly he let out a gasp and his eyes opened wider.  "Why of course, now it doth make sense" he said under his breath.  Everyone looked at him curiously wondering what it was that he had just concluded.  "During my time in Sharlayan in my studies I doth come across an ancient archive speaking of events yet to come, some of which have already come to pass.  Far into its pages t'was a prophecy that to this day hath left many a scholar mired by confusion and unable to transcribe.  "And so shall it be that a stranger from a distant land where no man has laid his eyes upon will deliver a people not of their flesh and blood from the jaws of Oblivion and awaken the sleepers from their endless slumber, and by the light will their presence be a symbol of prosperity."  Just a few nights prior a new star awakened in the constellation of Azeyma at the same hour as The Awakening.  I believe this to be the light of prosperity as mentioned in the texts and that the stranger from a distant land is none other than our comrade."

Everyone gasped at Urianger's words.  "So, she's part of a prophecy?" Thancred said in surprise.  "Then we had no right in judging her for coming here even if it was by Hydaelyn's doing."

"I feel terrible" Alisaie said remorsefully, her face contort in anguish.  "We were all so harsh with her when she told us the truth about herself and how she got here."  Alphinaud walked over to his sister and placed an arm around her shoulders and began to gently comfort her.

"She certainly didn't come across as someone who could deliver people from the jaws of Oblivion as you've stated, but perhaps we all judged her too soon" Y'shtola said facing Urianger, her blank eyes beginning to show signs of regret.

"Now you understand the situation we're facing and why I've called for another meeting" the Exarch spoke up above them.  Urianger nodded now that he fully understood the seriousness that had befallen his friends.  "Our next step is to determine where to go from here.  Without the Warrior of Darkness among us this will no doubts impede our capabilities to proceed into more dangerous territories, especially those of what would be considered belonging to a much needed ally.  I have no doubts in my mind were I to approach her again she would be even less willing to listen and I would risk losing any future chances of trying to convince her otherwise.  This means that unfortunately I'm once more impeeded in my attempts in trying to find a way to send you all back home and my studies in ancient Allagan archives are all but becoming exhausted.  I fear I may not find a way as I promised I would."

To Learn, To Understand

Strolling around the hamlet known as The Silver Bazaar Reubemont immediately began striking a conversation with some of the locals.  Melanie looked about hoping to spot something that resembled a tavern but unfortunately there were only 3 old stone buildings and 2 of them looked like they were residential rather than communal.  The third was a round building which from what she could discern when someone walked out of it was some kind of storage, perhaps something like a trades hut where one could inspect some of the local goods before purchase.  In the middle of the hamlet was a small well in the midst of a large round platformed area.  Melanie took notice that there were several small walls that looked like cornerstones of old buildings that had worn down and were left to rubble.  This place had definitely seen better days.

The sound of the ocean drew Melanie's attention and quietly she strolled over to a pathway leading down to a fishing dock.  A couple of small yachts were in the dock being tended to by their owners whilst a couple of fishers were sat by a small campfire begrudging over a flagon of wine that when the scent reached Melanie's nostrils reminded her of the cheap swill back on Earth that was popular among young punters who didn't know better.  She listened to the sound of the ocean gently brushing up against the rocks and closed her eyes breathing in the sea breeze.  Just the sound of normality began to make her feel a little homesick and in that moment forgot she was on an alien world.

Suyaya had followed Melanie down towards the docking area and looked up at her.  She didn't know her comrade that well but she could see something was bothering Melanie and she felt she needed to ask.  Melanie was blissfully unaware that she was being watched.  "Are you alright?  You haven't been looking at all well since we left the goblin encampment" Suyaya asked.

Melanie opened her eyes barely taking her gaze from the distance where she could see several rocky islands and the towering remains of Pharos Sirius floating above the ocean, reminding her once again that she was no longer home.  She was still feeling shaken from her experiences on the road.  "You really didn't see it, didn't you?" she finally spoke.  Suyaya tilted her head and looked quizzically at Melanie.  "See what?" she asked.  Melanie closed her eyes once more and deeply breathed in the sea breeze through her nostrils.  "Never mind, it's too difficult to explain" she replied shaking her head.  Suyaya was now left with more questions than answers, however she felt that right now if she tried to persue them she would get nothing else in response.  "Let's head back up" Melanie said as she turned around and began scaling back up the path.

Back at the round Reubemont had finished talking with the locals and was now looking around for his comrades.  "Ah, there you are" he said as he saw Melanie approaching the well with Suyaya close behind her.  "I couldn't find much of interest here.  In fact according to the locals this once used to be a popular hamlet at the heart of the local sea trade but as of late business has been slow and only refugees now gather here.  There isn't much to find except just a few wares of what used to belong to the residents and the odd barrel of fish."  He glanced over at Melanie with a hint of concern.  Her face was looking slightly pale and she hadn't said much since they left the road.  "If you wish we can just take it easy for the rest of the day and wait for our friends to arrive tomorrow and then we can resume our training."  Melanie shook her head.  "No, it's alright.  I want to be an adventurer.  I owe it to many people I care about.  If that means I have to put aside my own feelings and convictions to do what I have to do then I'll do whatever is necessary."

Reubemont could see Melanie's conflicts were deeply troubling her but he nonetheless smiled and put a hand on her shoulder.  "Being an adventurer doesn't mean completely shutting yourself out.  You don't have to pretend you don't feel anything.  If anything that's what makes us stronger."

Melanie smiled up at him.  "You always have something nice and uplifting to say even though I'm new to the team" she said.

"Actually those words are what my sister told me once upon a time, but let's leave that discussion for another day" he said smiling even more.  From the way he spoke so fondly of her and the numerous times he'd already mentioned her it was clear that he cared a lot for his sister.  "Let's head back out and resume our practice then.  I saw some coblyns on the way up here earlier on, I think we can safely take those on."  Melanie and Suyaya nodded and together they left the hamlet in persuit of the coblyns.

It didn't take long before they were approaching the hammers once more.  Ignoring the goblin encampment they pressed on a little ways until they came across an opening where there were many large and round spikey blue creatures as tall as humans on thin long legs with wide open mouths full of razor sharp teeth.  Their spikes appeared to be made from cobalt crystals.  2 beady eyes protuded from 2 long antanae in front of what Melanie would assume was its face which was both comical and scary to look at.  These creatures resembled spiders in a ways that made Melanie shudder in response.

Reubemont saw Melanie's reaction and nodded to himself satisfied that he had chosen a beast that Melanie wouldn't feel as remorseful over defeating.  He unsheathed his sword from his hilt and readied his shield.  "ok, let's rough these up, what say you?" he said looked over his shoulder to Melanie.  Melanie unclipped her sceptre from her robes and posed herself for battle with a nod.  Suyaya also did the same with her branch readying herself.  "Very well.  These beasts are more tougher than the ones we fought earlier so, Suyaya I may need to rely on your healing powers rather than your elemental ones."  Suyaya nodded in acknowledgment.  Satisfied everyone was ready Reubemont ran forwards and struck one of the nearest coblyns.  The beast turned around making a loud clacking noise from inside it's...throat?  Did it even have a throat?  Melanie hadn't heard anything like it before except from in the game but even so it sounded very alien and creepy.  The coblyn struck out with 2 tendrils that were hanging loosely from in front of its main body coiling them around Reubemont's shield and striking the side of his face and leaving a small graze.  Reubemont flinched and tried to duck behind his shield looking for an opening to strike again as the coblyn began wildly flailing its tendrils at him.

"Ungh!" Reubemont grunted as several small rocks slammed into his back making him lurch forward.  Melanie looked around to see a rather angry looking earth elemental drawing up the earth around it and hurling it towards Reubemont.  She furrowed her eyebrows and turned to face it.  "Leave the elemental to me" she said as she turned her attention towards the floating mass of rock and crystal.  Her fingers started to dance in the air feeling around for the fire aspect coiling around her fingers and drew upon the aether within herself.  She was now starting to get get a little faster in feeling and drawing upon the energies.  What's more she noticed she didn't even need to speak the incantation outloud, she could just mouth it whilst thinking it.  A fireball lunged its way forwards as she thrust out her sceptre towards the elemental, crashing against its rocky exterior and interrupting its casts.  Reubemont was now taking a fair pummelling from the coblyn and struggling to keep the attacks at bay as its tendrils lashed around looking for a weak spot.  He started to weaken with exhaustion when a white light rained on him from above and bathed him in its soothing glow.  He glanced a smile over at Suyaya before straightening himself up with renewed vigor and looking more determined than ever, his wounds having now closed up and the pain subsided.

Melanie hurled one more fireball at the elemental causing it to violently shake as it destabilized and crumbled to the ground as a heap of rocks.  "Urgh..." Melanie began to pant and feel weak, her legs starting to struggle to hold her upright and her head spinning wildly.  What is happening to me?  Melanie realised she forgot Cocobuki's words to her earlier "don't drain yourself completely."  She weakly raised her scepter facing towards the coblyn and started to fumble around the air for the ice aspect whilst drawing upon what little latent aether remained within her.  She collapsed to her knees gasping for air as an ice bolt launched from her sceptre and smashed into the coblyn's body.  An icy chill coursed through her body awakening her once more.  She could feel a surge of energy rush through her body until she was able to push herself back onto her feet and was ready for battle once again.  Suyaya caught a glance at Melanie and resumed her role, calling out to the elementals to aid her in battle.  A barrage of fireballs, ice bolts and rocks hurled their way forwards as Suyaya and Melanie invoked their magics and slammed into the coblyn until it finally succumbed to the onslaught and collapsed.

"Whew, that was a close one!" Reubemont exclaimed excitedly as he sheethed his sword.  He took a look at his shield which had been shattered in several places with several chunks of missing.  "This is no good, I'm going to have to replace this" he said shaking his head in dismay and tossing the hunk of splintered wood and metal to the side of the road.

"You did great there, and you even handled that elemental all by yourself!" Suyaya jumped excitedly.  "Just next time don't let yourself get too drained of your aether, you're no good to us if you're dead" she whispered so that Reubemont wouldn't hear her and winked at Melanie.  Melanie nodded greatfully for the warning.

"We'll have to head back into the main city so I can buy a new shield" Reubemont sighed.  "Let's stick to the road so we can avoid any encounters."  The group headed back onto the cobbled path and followed it around until they reached the stone stairways leading back up into Ul'dah.  Once they were back inside the city Reubemont turned to face his comrades.  "We can meet back at The Quicksand while I go visit the exchange and have lunch, then we can discuss what to do here on" he said to Melanie and Suyaya who nodded in response.  Parting ways Melanie and Suyaya took to the stairway leading up to the tavern whilst Reubemont disappeared down the street.

Suyaya felt this was another good opportunity to attempt at striking a conversation with Melanie.  "So, where exactly do you herald from?" she asked curiously as they began to approach the entrance to The Quicksand.

Melanie tried to think hard.  She hadn't yet thought about where she would state her origins.  Although she'd seen many places in the game in the years she played it she knew she couldn't just select one of those as her places of origin in case they'd one day visit and her friends expect everyone there to know her.  Nobody knew much about the miqo'te tribes other than those of the M and U tribes, so she wouldn't need to specify any actual location because it was out of respect that their settlements remained secret to avoid being hunted and invaded by other warring tribes.  She could simply describe her own home in a ways that it sounded like it was somewhere in Eorzea.  "I come from a land very far away.  You won't know of it as it's not marked on any map nor is it spoken of.  There are many hills where you can see far into the horizon for yalms and lots of deep valleys, canals and forests.  It truely is a peaceful place unlike any in Eorzea where there are few qualms and no monsters to fell."

Suyaya's eyes widened in fascination at Melanie's description.  "A place with few qualms and no monsters.  It sounds like a paradise.  It almost makes me wonder why you would want to seek adventure when you come from a world that sounds so perfect."

Melanie gasped at Suyaya's comments and turned her gaze to the ground.  "It's not perfect, far from it" she said quietly.  "That kind of society stagnates over time with people busying themselves repeating the same thing day after day.  Those in power dictate how we do things in order to survive and often the choices are in their favour rather than for those of the people as a whole.  Because of this my people are struggling and working themselves to the bone whilst slowly forgetting what it truely is to live.  On top of that our constant need for resources is bleeding the land dry and negatively affecting our environment.  We desperately need to make changes in how we do things but there's no easy answer to continue what we're doing without harming the land nor do our peers show any interest in making such changes that would affect their profiteering, and as for the rest of society they have come to accept that they're powerless to make any significant changes and so turn a blind eye to it all and only concern themselves with how to survive and thinking about themselves in the present."  Melanie's eyes started to well up as she started to think about her home and the state it was in.

Suyaya could see that describing her home was making Melanie sad.  It gave her a bit more of an understanding to why Melanie left home to become an adventurer even if she truely didn't know where she was from or why she was now here.  "I'm sorry for making such an assumption" she replied shaking her head in dismay.  "Your home sounds like a place one can only dream about.  It's sad to hear that your people are not treating it as such."

Melanie shook her head trying not to cry or think any more about her world.  "I'm sorry that this came across so depressing and negative" she said.

"No, it's quite alright.  It gives me a better understanding now of where you're from and the kind of person you are" Suyaya smiled.  "You care very deeply for others, that much is undeniable the way you reacted when we fought the marmot earlier.  You want to make positive changes that can make a difference to others, that's why you became an adventurer isn't it?  Not unlike a Warrior of Light."

Melanie gasped again then smiled and nodded at Suyaya who was now beaming an even greater smile.  "I believe Reubemont chose well in introducing you to our team.  We've all come from different backgrounds where we've been faced with tough struggles and having to make difficult choices.  Take Reubemont for example, though he rarely speaks of this anymore, he and his sister lost their father at Ferndale when they were very young and then just a few years later after moving to Ishgard they also lost their mother who succumbed to illness during the wake of the battle of Carteneau.  As orphans they went through so much together, yet instead of being consumed by hatred like so many others did he swore to protect his sister and took up arms as a gladiator so he could protect her and those he cared for.  We all want to make positive changes that will affect others some day, so know that you're not alone and that which drives you also drives us to become stronger together."

First Day Out

It was still early afternoon when Melanie, Reubemont and Suyaya slurped away the last few drops from their wooden tankards that were previously filled with Baderon's Ale that had been imported from Limsa Lominsa that same morning.  Having fully recovered from the events that took part earlier on Melanie had already put aside such memories and was happily chatting away with her new team.

"So, what made you decide to become an adventurer?" Suyaya asked her.

"I was looking for something a little different from my mundane lifestyle, something that gave me a sense of accomplishment and that I could apply to helping others in need and in worse situations" Melanie replied.  It wasn't enturely untruthful, Melanie had for years been so accustomed to spending her life in misery with a lot of it being self-inflicted that she longed for things to change and to be able to feel satisfied that for once she did something in life that actually meant something.  She had always been empathetic to other people's feelings above her own and it gave her a sense of happiness to see them pull through whatever deep pit they'd been dragged into and knowing she helped them get back out of it again.  "How about you?"

"I wanted to follow in my parent's foosteps.  They used to be great conjurers, that is until the day Dalamud fell and claimed their lives among so many others.  I was still only a child at the time so my grand parents took me in and they'd tell me tales about them, how they devoted their lives into helping others and healing the sick and wounded.  This wand used to belong to my mother, it was found lying next to her body just outside of Cartenau still glowing.  I'd like to believe that a part of her is still with me in this wand, still wanting to help others in need."

Melanie looked down at the small branch that was clipped to Suyaya's robe.  Any other branch would've started to wither by now, yet this branch still glowed with life as if it had been freshly plucked from the tree.  Melanie smiled at her.  "I've no doubts she is" she said.  "And what about you Reubemont?" Melanie turned her eyes to him as he wiped away the moisture from his lips and settled his tankard back down onto the table.

"Me?  Well I err... I guess that I wanted to protect my sister and those dear to me."  Melanie continued to listen expecting more as he gazed into his now empty tankard, but instead he stood up and slammed his hands on the table.  "I don't know about you but I think it's high time we tried out our skills, what say you?" he said in a loud and cheerful voice and then started to make his way outside The Quicksand.  Melanie looked a little surprised at his sudden departure then quickly grabbed her belongings and followed with Suyaya.

Approaching the large entry way into the city Melanie started to feel a mixture of excitement and anxiety.  Whilst she was aware that most of the wildlife outside the city were harmless unless provoked it still left her feeling scared.  Her heart almost skipped a beat when she saw the ladybirds outside and almost sent her into a full panic attack.  Those things were HUGE!  She'd seen big bugs back on Earth but nothing quite this size.  It was as big as a cat and its large antenna and twitching head movements made her feel nervous.  She thought she was about to faint as Reubemont pulled out his sword and readied his shield to attack.  "Here, let us take this one down" he said eyeing up the ladybug.

"Oh good grief, we're really going to fight that thing!" Melanie thought to herself despairingly.  Her body started to shake as she unwillingly unclipped her sceptre from her robes and held it in front of her.  Reubemont charged in, striking the ladybird with his sword leaving a gash on its side.  The ladybird in turn turned around and began trying to claw at him with its legs and bite him.  Reubemont blocked its attacks with his shield whilst trying to look for an opportunity to strike again.  Melanie stood there not able to do a thing, her eyes transfixed in fear and her heart palpitating like it was about to burst.

Suyaya raised her hands to her side and began chanting under her breath whilst clutching onto the small branch.  The earth below her started to respond, collecting up around her into large rocks then being hurled through the air directly at the ladybird and knocking it off-balance.  Melanie tried to snap to and quickly closed her eyes whilst speaking out the incantation for fire but nothing was happening.  She was too nervous to focus.

Eventually the ladybird fell to the ground in an agonizing squeal, its wings shattered in many places and yellow fluid spread all over its broken body.  Melanie opened her eyes and looking down at its corpse felt deep remorse as well as embarassment for her own inadequacies.  Reubemont wiped the fluid from his blade and looked over at Melanie.  "It's never easy, the first time.  I know how you feel.  I too struggled to draw blood on my first day.  But in the end it's about survival.  You do what you need to do to survive."  He sheethed his blade and walked over to her placing a hand on her shoulder.  Melanie still posed to attack looked up at him with teary eyes.  "Don't beat yourself up over this.  We can try again and you needn't be afraid of playing your part.  Remember, this is about survival.  If you don't kill them they will kill you."

Reubemont walked away looking for another target whilst Melanie still stood there eyes wide open in fear and shock, her lips quivvering and tears slowly rolling down her face.  She looked down at the body of the dead ladybird and still couldn't help but feel sorry.  The ladybird didn't do anything to harm them, all it was doing was fighting to survive.  They were the aggressors for drawing swords first.  This was all too hard for her to accept right away.  Is this to be my new way of life now, to attack without due reason and bring death to innocent creatures such as this?  "Head's up!" Reubemont called out as he came running back.  This time he was being followed by a furry creature the size of a small dog with long furry ears, a large bushy tail, and the most pointiest and sharpest teeth.  "This one's a real fighter, don't hold back!" Reubemont shouted over to them as he turned to face the creature.

Again Suyaya began chanting causing the earth to dance around her and slam into the creature's body.  Melanie still unable to do anything stared at the adorable looking creature as it fought tooth and nail to survive.  "Hey, Brovola" Suyaya whispered to her.  Melanie looked down at Suyaya.  "If you want to become an adventurer you'll need to attack.  I know right now it feels wrong to fight such peaceful looking creatures, but left unchecked it won't be our choice to make as they'll become too much to handle.  Right now we're doing the city a favour.  Already their population is starting to enroach on the city's crop fields and smaller outposts.  If we don't regularly cull them down they'll become fearless in large numbers and start invading the city's markets stealing food from the stalls and leaving the citizens to go hungry, not only that but they'll also drive themselves into starvation once all the food's gone.  So think of it as doing both them and the citizens of Ul'dah a favour."  Suyaya smiled at Melanie.  Melanie nodded as she could totally see sense in Suyaya's words.

She's right, if the wildlife continues to spread untamed then it would be crueller for them to be left to suffer.  As much as I hate the idea of taking an innocent creature's life this is the best way to maintain a healthy balance that doesn't result in untold suffering where everyone's affected.

Melanie closed her eyes and began to meditate on herself and feel around for the firey warmth.  It took several seconds until she felt her aether began to churn within her and a familiar warmth coil around her fingers.  Her scepter glowed brightly as she pulled it back towards herself and then in a serene voice she quietly uttered the incantation.

"Burn."

A fireball hurled its way towards the furry creature singing the fur on its back sending it into a wild frenzy.  It lept into the air ready to dig its teeth into Reubemont's neck when a rock smacked into the sides of its jaws knocking it unconscious to the ground.  Melanie lowered her hands and ran over to the creature and once again started to feel remorse for what she'd done.  The poor thing must've suffered terribly.  Its body was covered in blood and smouldering fur, its jaws smashed in from the onslaught of rocks.  She knelt down beside it and offered a silent prayer, tears rolling down her cheeks and dripping from her chin.

Reubemont looked a little surprised to see her praying but as he looked down at the creature's corpse he began understand why.  "You are a very caring person.  Once again you remind me of my sister" he said softly once Melanie finished her prayer and watched as its body dissipated into aether.  "Rest assured its suffering is now over."

Melanie's face grimaced.  "It didn't need to suffer" she sobbed quietly without looking up at him.  "Was this really the only way?  Was there no kinder way to put it down without resulting to butchery and torture?"

Reubemont's jaws opened in surprise to her response then he closed his eyes and breathed out sadly.  "This is the way of adventurers.  We try not to think too hard about how we do things unless we need to.  Whilst it would be nice to administer a more kinder form of euthanasia we don't have the resources, and we need to do it this that way so that we become stronger for when faced with more fiercer opponents later on."

Melanie lowered her hands and raised herself back onto her feet whilst still holding her head down.  She wasn't feeling comfortable of the idea of using innocent creatures as a punching bag to make herself stronger.  To her that was no better than bullying, an experience she was all too familiar with.  She took a final look at the dead creature at her feet and let out a dejected sigh.

"The first kill is never the easiest" Reubemont continued.  "It doesn't get that much easier beyond that either, but after a while we tune out of it and no longer think of it in the same way."  He then glanced around at the arid landscape.  Most of the land was dry with scatterings of dry grass and the odd ironwood tree here and there.  Nearby was a waypoint known as Scorpion Crossing where many of the goods going in and out of Ul'dah were being hauled and bound for delivery, whilst even further in the distance atop a tall hill was the Beaconhill Lighthouse towering high above the ocean.  There were very few places to stop and rest and some of the nearby wildlife was already looking at the trio nervously.  "We should stop for a rest.  There's a settlement west of here near the cliffs known as The Silver Bazaar.  I'm sure they wouldn't mind us stopping by."

Reubemont led the small group west along a cobbled trail past some large automated hammers that were pounding into the ground flattening it into a level foundation.  Each slam was accompanied with a loud thud that made the ground beneath them shake and caused Melanie's heart to leap into her throat.  As they were passing the final hammer Reubemont stopped whilst looking northwards.  Looming near the edge of the cliffs was a group of several goblins wearing leathers and carrying large satchels on their backs with various junk items dangling off them.  Reubemont's face crumpled with dissatisfaction as he looked at them.

"What is it?" Suyaya asked him.  "Goblins" he replied with a slight growl in his voice.  Melanie started to feel her head hurt and become a little light for a moment and raised a hand to the side of her temples with a slight grimace.  "They've been a pest to the local workers and also to travelers on the path leading between Scorpion Crossing and The Silver Bazaar.  Constantly dismantling parts from the hammers and robbing traveling merchants.  I think we'd do all these people here a favour if we were to put them in their place."

"Are you sure there's enough of us?  There's only 3 of us and 8 of them" Suyaya asked a little concerned.

Reubemont looked around at the group of goblins and eyed a group of 3 patrolling just outside of the encampment.  "If we take on that small group over there I think we can divide them up so we take on fewer numbers at once.  I'll divert their attention behind this rock and take the one in the middle.  Suyaya you take the one on the right and Brovola you take the one on the left.  Don't hesitate to give them all you've got, this is life and death we're talking about."

Melanie swallowed hard as she readied herself to take on the goblins.  Life and death huh?  I guess I'll have to put aside my feelings for now.

Reubemont moved forward closer to the goblin encampment trying not to be seen.  He picked up a small stone nearby and waited for an opportunity to grab the goblin's attention.  "Easy now" he said to himself quietly, then he threw the stone in their direction.  "Oh bugger" he said as not just 3 but 5 goblins came charging for him.  He desperately ran back to his comrades waving out to them.  "Hurry, get safe, go!" he shouted in a panic.  Suyaya and Melanie looked confused then saw Reubemont's facial expression suddenly change from desperation to surprise then pain.  His eyes closed as he fell forward and slumped to the ground.  Behind him a goblin was holding a dagger dripping with blood and a pool of blood was beginning to form underneath Reubemont's body.

Suyaya and Melanie both shrieked and proceeded to run.  As Melanie began running she heard an explosion followed by a scream and noticed Suyaya was no longer running beside her.  "Suyaya?!" she gasped.  She stopped to turn around and saw Suyaya lying on the ground, her clothes smouldering on her back.  Melanie's eyes opened even wider as she gasped and proceeded to continue running.

It all happened so quickly.  One moment she was about to flee again and the next she felt a sharp pain in her stomach.  Time felt like it started to slow as she stopped in her tracks and looked down at the goblin standing in front of her.  She stumbled backwards seeing what looked like the hilt of a dagger sticking out from her gut and warm blood soaking into her robes.  The pain, oh the pain.  She sank to her knees tears starting to fill her eyes.  Is this really the end already?  The end of me?  What about G'raha Tia and the others...who'll save them...who...  Everything started to go blurry and dark and the world around her turn as she slumped to the ground embedding the dagger further into her stomach.  I don't want to die...

"Are you sure there's enough of us?  There's only 3 of us and 8 of them."

The world started to reshape in front of Melanie's eyes again and she was back on her feet with her friends.  Her head was stinging and she was holding a hand against the side of the temples.  What the... wait, was that the echo I witnessed just now?

"If we take on that small group over there I think we can divide them up so we take on fewer numbers at once.  I'll divert their attention behind this rock and take the one in the middle.  Suyaya you take the one on the right and..."

"Wait!!!" Melanie called out with her arm outstretched towards Reubemont and her eyes wide open.  Reubemont and Suyaya looked at Melanie surprised.  "I don't think this is a good idea" Melanie said in a desperate voice.  Reubemont tilted his head slightly looking confused.  "What makes you think that? All we need to do is just split them up and we should be fine" Reubemont said confidently.

"Actually, I'm with Brovola" Suyaya said as she watched the goblins moving around.  "I think if we try to split them up they'll just band together.  The way they're moving suggests that they'll stick up for one another."

Reubemont looked back at the pack eyeing them up.  "Hmm, I think you're right" he said after some mulling over.  "Perhaps we should just ignore them then for now.  Good call Brovola.  Let's keep on going."  Reubemont and Suyaya started back down the cobbled path towards the small settlement in the nearby distance whilst Melanie followed behind feeling shaken up over what she had witnessed but moments ago.  So this is the power of the echo, the ability to discern what's about to happen in order to avoid a catastrophy.  None of them are aware of what I just saw, what I actually felt.  She glanced down at her stomach and gently touched it with her fingers.  Nothing, not even a scratch, yet I still feel the knife blade inside me.  I can feel the pain it caused me.  I can smell the blood in my nostrils.  What is this gift even?
